Birmingham hosted a huge celebration event on 15 April as it welcomed taking on the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The handover took place at the 2018 Games closing ceremony on Australia’s Gold Coast, and included a mass participation dance choreographed by award-winning London Contemporary Dance School alumna Rosie Kay. 2,022 young people were recruited to perform live in the city centre for the handover. The resulting piece, filmed in a single shot, was put together by Kay in just ten days.
You can watch the full handover piece on the BBC here.
Rosie Kay Dance Company was awarded Best Independent Company at the National Dance Awards in 2016, and Kay was also nominated for Best Modern Choreography for 5 Soldiers. The company received a second nomination in 2018.
