National Centre for Circus Arts announces winner for Business Plan Award 2018

The National Centre for Circus Arts has announced the winner for the 2018 Business Plan Award, a £10,000 grant awarded annually to one graduating company of the BA (Hons) Circus Arts programme. This year’s award goes to David Sanchez in support of the start-up of his two man company Circo Duo.

David forms one part of the company, alongside Thorne Bailey, who graduated from the National Centre in 2017. David and Thorne met while studying at the National Centre and instantly found a comedic connection.

Together they will create a show called Get Ready: A two man comedic take on a morning’s activities. The one hour long show will look into the life of two meticulous friends getting ready in the morning. Through the use of theatre, comedy and circus, they will show how a simple and routine task can turn into an adventure. The show will explore the subtleties and nuances of the conflicts, frustrations and brotherly love of the early morning routines between two friends living together. Not only will they perform and entertain, they will also teach and inspire. They will offer workshops to both adults and children to raise awareness of modern circus whilst teaching non-circassian’s skills in juggling, theatre and cyr wheel.

Past winners of the Business Plan Award include Alula, Barely Methodical Troupe and Simple Cypher. Projects have seen circus performances being developed in abandoned spaces, explored the therapeutic nature of juggling and have toured internationally.
