How we
work

Established as a Higher Education Institution in 2001, the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama is charitable company limited by guarantee.

The Conservatoire directs overall strategy for each of its schools through a process of consultation. This relationship between the Conservatoire and its schools is set out in a financial memorandum and an operating agreement and agreed with the governing body of each school. Within this agreement, each of the schools remains a legally autonomous institution.

The Conservatoire holds ultimate accountability for the proper use and stewardship of the public funds it receives. Its main tasks are to:

  • plan, deliberate and take decisions about the Conservatoire’s development
  • liaise with the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) over funding, reporting and other relevant matters
  • manage the relationship with the schools
  • promote the interests and establish the presence of the Conservatoire

The activities in support of the Conservatoire’s functions consist mainly of:

  • deliberative meetings of a governing board, sub-committees, an academic board and working groups
  • preparation of policy and other relevant papers
  • maintaining records
  • data collection, analysis presentation and reporting
  • financial planning and management
  • overseeing joint projects, conferences and performances
  • administration of the above

Board of Governors

The Conservatoire’s Board of Governors, which meets formally at least three times a year, comprises lay and academic persons appointed in accordance with the Conservatoire’s Articles of Association. There is a clear separation of roles of the non-executive Chairman and other non-executive Governors and the Conservatoire’s Chief Executive, the Joint Principals. Staff and students are represented on the Board.

The Board approves the Conservatoire’s long-term objectives and strategies and provides overall financial and organisational control. The Board has a number of committees including a Finance Committee, an Audit Committee, a Nominations Committee and other ad hoc committees as required from time to time.

Principals’ Management Group

The Joint Principals carry out the responsibilities as Chief Executive of the Conservatoire, and are responsible for the organisation, direction and management of the institution and the leadership of the staff. One of the Joint Principals is designated as the Accounting Officer and takes responsibility for the conduct of the business of the Conservatoire.

The Principals’ Management Group holds executive responsibility for the management of the Conservatoire. It is led by the Joint Principals and consists of all the Principals/Directors of the Conservatoire schools supported by senior staff of the Conservatoire. The Group deliberates on policy, receives minutes from the Academic Board and the Conservatoire’s various working groups, considers recommendations from these bodies and determines the Conservatoire’s executive actions. Full meetings of the Principals’ Management Group are held three or four times a term.
