Circus Space

Circus Space is the leading centre of excellence in Britain’s contemporary circus arts and is one of Europe’s top three circus training centres. It is based in a former power station, which was redeveloped to create a spectacular environment for circus training and production. Further development of the premises was completed in 2006, including a dedicated acrobatics studio and office space for circus companies, consolidating the Circus Space’s status as the finest circus training facility in Britain.

Circus Space offers a diverse artistic programme that includes the UK’s only Higher Education programme in Circus Arts. The course is ideal for students with some experience in circus, gymnastics, performance or dance and who would relish the opportunity to experiment and create new work with other talented performers. The school also offers professional development opportunities for aspiring and established circus performers; participatory and leisure activities for young people and adults from the local community and across London; an annual festival; and a performance programme of showcase cabarets.

Circus Space joined the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama in 2004.

A student perspective

“The circus and me, or me and the Circus? Hard training, constant effort, pain, and at the end satisfaction and happiness. Circus is my body combined with my imagination and creativity.”
Marcella Manzilli

“I’ve been waiting for a long time to do this circus course and now… here I am. I used to be certain that I wanted to end up doing flying trapeze, but now I’ve found out more and the list has grown… swinging trapeze, cradle, German wheel!”
Rosamond Martin

Alumni

The programme is instrumental in the creation and development of contemporary circus arts in the UK. Recent graduates have worked with companies including NoFit State Circus and Cirque du Soleil and performed in shows ranging from London International Mime Festival to Pericles at the Globe Theatre.
