Thinking Dance

NSCD | Dance | Research and Knowledge Exchange

Leeds Metropolitan University and Yorkshire Dance in association with the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Phoenix Dance Theatre delivered ‘Thinking Dance’, an ambitious two-week programmed of dance research from 7 – 17 July 2014, which culminated in a one-day symposium on Friday 18 July.

The two-week programme provided a platform for scholars, practitioners and industry professionals to engage in new discourse around current cultural trends, landscapes, practices in contemporary dance and choreography as we move forwards into the 21st century.

Two artists were invited to develop a piece of research over the two weeks, which involved taking part in and hosting a number of artist-led classes, lunchtime provocations, a salon and a sharing, a selection of which were also open to members of the public.

The two weeks of collaboration, learning and research culminated in a symposium on Friday 18 July at Leeds Metropolitan University, which included individual papers, curated panels and practical presentations, including a paper from Northern School of Contemporary Dance’s Kathinka Walter.
